What Are The Most Common DOT Inspection Levels?
North American Standard (NAS) Inspection
The North American Standard (NAS) is the most popular and most complex inspection in North America. These inspections can last anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour and cover both your truck and its driver. Every system from your suspension to your after-treatment components is covered. All of the driver's documentation and licensing will be inspected as well.
Vehicle-Only Inspection
A vehicle-only inspection includes the vast majority of what’s covered in the NAS, however, it does not include driver documentation or anything that would require the examiner to go underneath your vehicle. This particular inspection lasts anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes and is often performed on the roadside by a member of law enforcement.
Special Inspections
Special inspections do not have dedicated parameters and instead are focused on a different component every time. There is no dedicated timespan for this inspection as certain systems take longer to inspect than others. This particular type of inspection may be undergone in the case of an accident to establish cause, amongst other similar scenarios.
